Five Goods Things Part 3: Entertainment Edition

This week I thought I’d share a few things keeping me entertained at home. If you’re tired of Netflix and can’t find enough focus to read a book, this list might have something for you.

1. Daybreaker

Daybreaker started in NYC as a dance event for sober people, but in the time of Corona, just think of it as the answer to your quarantine insanity. One-part yoga and meditation, one-part dance party with animal puppets and costumes and amazing house music via zoom meeting with hundreds of people from all over the world. This was the best thing I did all month. It made me laugh and cry tears of joy and it made me feel connected to the world in a way I haven’t felt in years—see my newsletter for details. Next virtual Daybreaker event is April 25th! Sign up and make it a family event, I promise you won’t regret it!

2. Creative Writing Prompts

I have to thank my daughter Lucy’s 12th grade English teacher for this one. Ms. Phillips used this website in Lucy’s class and she loved it so much, we’ve been doing a prompt from the list every morning since school was canceled. Numbered 1-346, the prompts work well teens and adults, but older elementary age students might enjoy them as well. We take turns picking the prompt and spend about ten minutes writing and ten minutes sharing. The results have been hilarious to say the least. If you are worried that your kids aren’t doing much with online school, this is a fun way to get them writing. Remember, good writing comes from practice and practice can and should be fun and creative!

3. Movie Night with the Flicks

The Flicks, Boise’s best local theater, known for showing art house and independent films, is now streaming the new releases it was slated to show in the theater this spring. These are films not yet available to rent on Amazon Prime and streaming them through The Flicks website has the added benefit of supporting a beloved family-owned business when they need it most. Streaming fee is $12.

4. Creative Live

Creative Live is a subscription service similar to Master Class but focused on courses in the arts. I signed up for a yearlong pass because I am a writer and artist, but individual courses are available for purchase for as little as $12. From film editing to painting for beginners to setting up an Etsy shop to cake decorating, Creative Live has something for everyone. If you’ve ever thought about learning a new skill or deepening your understanding of something you already love to do, now is the time.

5. Audible Originals / Comedy for Adults

Have you lost the attention span necessary to read a book? Are you burned out on podcasts? Try one of these comedy audio shows on Audible, free with your subscription Reminiscent of the old radio shows popular before television, these audio stories are short (under two hours), easy to follow and track (even without visuals) and performed by actors you know and love (Paul Rudd, Nick Offerman, Kate McKinnon etc.)  I’ve been listening while I clean or make dinner and find myself laughing out loud. My favorites include: Escape from Virtual Island, Bedtime Stories for Cynics, and Heads Will Roll.
